Markings
|
Mark both of the 70" side pieces with a pencil using a square.
The marks will guide where the shelves will be attached to the sides.
Select the less nice face of the board for the inside of the shelving unit,
and make these pencil marks lightly on that face.
The side pieces will have marks for the top & bottom edges of the shelves.
The marks are to be drawn at these distances from the bottom end of the side boards.
3",
3 ¾",
16 ¼",
17",
29 ½",
30 ¼",
42 ¾",
43 ½",
56",
56 ¾",
69 ¼", (that last one is ¾" from the top end.)
Now mark where the kick-plate will touch the sides.
Mark two parallel lines each 3" long
from under the bottom shelf line down to the bottom end of the side board,
they are ¾" apart from each other.
One is ½" back from the front edge.
And the other is 1 ¼" back from the front edge.
Note that these marks are mirror image of each other on the two side boards.

|
| Step 4. |
Pilot Holes
|
The pilot holes need to line up, so mark the positions of these pilot holes first.
Center the holes between the guidelines, and not too close to the ends.
Use a 1/8" drill bit.
Place a block of scrap wood under the side pieces to be drilled,
right under where you will drill each hole.
The drill bit should pass through the side piece and go directly into the scrap block,
to reduce splintering when the drill bit exits the back of the side piece.
Where the kick-plate will meet the side pieces, drill holes 1" from the bottom,
and 1" from the top of the 3" guidelines. Those holes will be 1" apart.
Where the shelves will meet the side pieces, drill holes 2" from the front,
and 2" from the back, and one in the middle.
You should have 40 pilot holes now counting both side pieces,
4 for the kick-plate, and 36 for the shelves.
|
|
|
|
|
Now, in matching places, mark and drill pilot holes 1 ½" deep in both ends of the kick-plate and the 6 shelf pieces.
|
|
|
| Step 4. |
Assembly
|
Make sure all the joints are square as you assemble the Tall Shelf.
Use your 2" wood screws to attach the shelves and kick-plate to the sides.
You may want to start with the kick-plate and the top shelf first,
with the whole shelving unit laying on its front.
And attach the other shelves after.
Now the shelving unit should be on its front, with the kick-plate downward.
Center the 66 ¾" by 25" Masonite back panel on the back edges of the shelves.
There should be a 1/8"
uncovered edge of the side boards and of the top & bottom shelf,
all the way around the back panel.
Use your 7/8" nails to attach the back panel.
|
|
| Step 5. |
Finish
|
Paint or use wood stain or a clear finish as desired to fit the decor.
|
|
| Step 6. |
Anchor
|
To help keep the shelf from tipping over:
Use the 2 short wood screws to attach the canvas strap to the top edge of the top shelf at the middle of the back.
Use 2 longer screws and two wall anchors to attach the other end of the strap to the wall just above the shelf.
